Concerns have been raised over the lack of schools and GPs to support the building of new homes in a village on the city outskirts.

Villagers in Newton St Faith raised their worries as plans for 19 new houses in the community were submitted to Broadland District Council.

Under the plans, homes will be built in the land behind existing properties along Manor Road and Newton Street, with a driveway built to the development from Manor Road.

A large public open space will be designed to both the front and the rear of the cul-de-sac.

Chaplin Farrant, the developer behind the scheme, said 63pc of the homes would be affordable, of which 11 would be bungalows.

Only one of the properties will be a four-bed detached house, with the housing designs ranging from one-bed bungalows to a five-bed chalet bungalow.

But a neighbour raised concerns about the scheme.

They said: "Has there been any extra infrastructure built in the St Faiths catchment area since the last application for this land, new schooling, surgery capacity?" asked the neighbour.

"We have zero facilities to cope with the extra burden on our village apart from the same community centre and crematorium we have had for years.

"Has any impartial survey been carried out on the impact of the Crown Meadows estate to our village before granting further building?

"The access road is simply too close to the Manor Road to A140 junction to be safe for the extra car and foot traffic the development will create."

Broadland District Council will aim to make a decision about the plans by the end of September.
