The owner of a pizza takeaway is furious after receiving a one-star hygiene rating.

Mohammed A., who owns Mr Pizza, a takeaway in Portersfield Road in the Golden Triangle, said his restaurant is “very clean and tidy” despite getting the poor rating from inspectors.

He said: "We have been dealing with all of the issues, according to the council's instructions, and have booked in another inspection for the next few weeks.

"My restaurant is very clean and tidy and I've never had a complaint.

"I've put a lot of effort and money into this place and it's a shame that this has happened.

"A lot of the issues are very minor and I have never had a bad rating.

"It is very frustrating."

Among the work that he has undertaken, the rubbish has been removed from the back of the site and the chef has been booked into a management course in September.

The takeaway, which serves a range of pizzas, kebabs, fried chicken and burgers, received a zero-star hygiene rating in 2018, before bouncing back to four stars.

Now, inspectors have found flaking paint over the food preparation area in the business' rear room, "clutter" under the staircase and mould staining and staining on the door seals to the walk-in fridge and freezer.

The allergens were not listed for the items on the menu, which is considered a major "risk".

Attention was drawn to the rear yard of the property, where overgrown vegetation and random waste items of equipment and advertising material were piled up.

This included waste cooking oil which was described as an "attraction" for pests.

Mr Pizza will undergo another inspection in the coming months.
