A city sweet shop withdrew its application to revamp its storefront after City Hall deemed its plans unacceptable.

American Candy, in Gentleman's Walk opposite the market, applied to add illuminated signs and an additional entrance to its shop.

However, Norwich City Council criticised the designs claiming they were unacceptable compared to the rest of the area.

Either side of the shop are two Grade II listed buildings - the Royal Arcade and the adjoining WHSmith shop.

The council stated that the plans would "have a negative impact on the character" of the area.

American Candy opened last year and sells a range of treats from across the pond, from Jolly Ranchers to Reese's peanut butter cups.

The premises was formerly used by the EE phone company, which closed in 2022, relocating to Chantry Place.

It is one of a number of sweet shops in Norwich including Oh So Sweet in White Lion Street as well as The Chocolate Bar Baker and Dotties Treats and Sweets in the Market.
