The owner of a shop in a city suburb revealed plans to turn it into a cafe serving Turkish and English breakfasts.

Serkhan Ceyhan, who recently took over the premises at 199 Wroxham Road in Sprowston, has also lodged an application with the council for an alcohol licence.

The new business, named Cafe199, aims to throw open its doors next month.

"It's going to be a coffee shop with English and Turkish breakfasts," a spokesman said.

"We have applied for an alcohol license also because we are thinking about selling cocktails.

"We are in the middle of decoration and plan to open in the last week of September."

Traditional Turkish breakfasts - called kahvalti - typically consist of cheese, bread, eggs and jams but can also include olives, cured meats and pastries.

The upcoming cafe was formerly home to Astley & Co Estate Agents before it became embroiled in controversy over plans to turn it into a themed event space and seance cafe.

Sprowston Town Council and the county council's highways team both raised concerns the business would inflame existing parking problems, with Broadland District Council's environmental health team also objecting.

A lengthy battle ensued between Astley & Co bosses, the local authorities and the public who objected to the proposal on general disruption grounds.

It was then discovered that the seance cafe could go ahead without a new planning application so long as the two businesses did not operate side by side, leading to the estate agents' closure.

It is believed Yvonne Astley, the previous owner, passed on the deed to Serkhan Ceyhan in the last six months.
