Abel's Yard near Anglia Square left 'absolutely digusting'

And now locals say that it is not just rubbish that is collecting on the pavements but yobbos and ne’er-do-wells as well. 

Folk are angry - and they want action.

Among the rubbish dumped in Able’s Yard, just off Anglia Square, are empty beer cans, bottles and used needles.

Patricia Yaxley, 88, uses the alleyway as a cut-through to the shops in Magdalen Street but says she no longer feels safe using it.

She said: "It's absolutely disgusting.

"I'm old and struggle to get around so park in the disabled spaces near the fly-over which a lot of people my age do.

"But the littering in Abel's Yard has become so bad that I no longer use it - it's become an utter tip."

When our reporter went to the alleyway among the dumped items were dozens of discarded cans, tattered clothing, empty food packaging and even the base of an electric blender.

Patricia says that she also sees homeless people and drug addicts meeting at the site.

Borhane Mekkiou, the co-owner of Sahara Cafe which shares a wall with Abel's Yard, agreed.

He said: "They sit out behind the cafe all afternoon, drinking and dealing drugs.

"It's been like that for a while. The police come by but don't typically go down the alley so nothing much is being done."

Now people living nearby have had enough and are calling on the council to clear up the mess.

Patricia said: "I reported the issue to the city council more than three weeks ago but nobody has come to clear it and it's slowly getting worse.

"I've lived in the area for 57 years now and have never seen anything this bad.

"It's really not fair on people who go to shop along the street and I don't think I'm being a busybody by raising a complaint about it - something has to be done."

Norwich City Council has been approached for comment.
