Furious neighbours in a city estate say the removal of CCTV installed by the council to stop fly-tipping has led to piles of rubbish being left to linger.

The cameras were put up at Knowland Grove in the Marlpit area as part of Norwich City Council’s £100,000 Love Norwich campaign at the beginning of the year.

But people living nearby say they have already been removed and since then the area has become “an absolute mess” with rubbish in communal bins piling up and left uncollected.

Ashley Waterfield, who lives in Knowland Grove, said: "It's an absolute mess out there.

"Me and my family have to pass that filth every time we leave our home.

"I can't understand why the rubbish doesn't get removed regularly because the city council even installed new bin sheds there, but there's no point if they don't empty them properly.

"Taking away the CCTV definitely hasn't helped.

"Since being removed fly-tipping has got worse and crime in general has gone up.

The bins are located only a street away from Gristock Place which faced the same problems a week ago.

Green Party City Councillor for the area, Toby Boltont, added: "The council has spent a lot of money on bins shelters that are of no use if the bins don't get emptied regularly.

"They also spent a lot of money on CCTV which people living in the area welcomed.

"However they then took the camera away only a couple of months later.

"When the Labour-run city council can't get the basics right and empty bins, you have to think things are starting to look pretty chaotic."

Norwich City Council have been contacted for comment.
