Four elderly train enthusiasts at a Norwich care home fulfilled their childhood dreams with a surprise trip on the North Norfolk Railway.

The staff at Cavell Court, Norwich, discovered that residents Sally Pilkington, Margaret Wood, Roger Bradley, and Robert Murdoch were ardent steam train fans, and planned the perfect outing.

The evocative journey, which took in the stunning coastal scene, came complete with a classic helping of fish and chips.

Sally expressed her joy, having not ridden a steam train in her youth due to the cost.

She said: “What a wonderful day, thank you so much.

"Everything went perfectly and I thoroughly enjoyed the train ride and lunch.”

Similarly, Robert expressed his joy: “I have had a wonderful day, and it was good to do something different, thank you.”

Margaret fondly remembered seaside visits with her husband and living in the scenic beach town of Walberswick.

She beamed: “The team works so hard to give us incredible days out.

"I have never been on a steam train, so this was an absolute treat.”

Roger focused on the simple pleasures, stating: “My favourite part of the day was the fish and chips, they were delicious.”

The trip was part of the Wishing Tree Initiative, encouraging residents to share their wishes and aspirations.

Cavell Court's home manager Karen Curle said: “We had a wonderful afternoon sharing Sally, Margaret, Roger and Robert’s passion for steam trains and finally fulfilling their childhood wishes.

“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to share their hopes and dreams and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these a reality.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to the North Norfolk Railway for helping to make everyone’s day.”
