Folk living in a city suburb warn that “someone could die” if nothing is done about motorists speeding down their road.

Neighbours along Norwich Road say that it is becoming a danger hotspot because drivers regularly break the 30mph speed limit.

They say where the road joins with Gunton Lane is particularly bad.

Those living nearby want action taken after witnessing several incidents of cars crashing into people’s property during the last few years.

Norma Roper, 77, has lived in the area for more than 40 years and said: "If something isn't done then someone is going to get seriously hurt, or die.

"It's horrendous - I used to walk my dog along the path next to the road but I've stopped now because it's too dangerous.

"It's 30mph here and it's ridiculous how fast some drivers go - it's not safe."

Steve Williams who has lived in Norwich Road for 28 years, added: "There needs to be urgent and decisive action taken to resolve this issue.

"This isn't a new issue because there have been multiple incidents happening during the last 18 months to two years, with the most recent incident happening just down the road from me in March when a car demolished a wall and bus stop.

"The paths are in constant use throughout the day as well, so if there was someone walking along when this happened, they could have been hurt or even killed.

"If we have guests here I'll go to the other side of the road to make sure everything is clear because drivers speed around the corner.

"There have been police stopped across the road but they're never there for very long.

"Something needs to be done soon to stop this."

WHAT'S BEING DONE TO COMBAT SPEEDING MOTORISTS?

Jenny McCloskey, a Costessey town councillor who also lives in Norwich Road, is hoping to put up a SAM (speed awareness message) Camera in the road to monitor the area.

She said: "It's been long planned to put the camera out because there was a slight delay in knowing where we could put it.

"However I'm going out with another councillor this week to put it up, hopefully at the junction of Gunton Lane.

"I'm hoping this will remind people not to speed because I believe the majority speeding down here don't realise.

"It's almost impossible to get out my house sometimes and it's a consistent problem."

SAM Cameras make note of the speed drivers are doing, which can be sent to the police in order to highlight speeding hotspots around the city.
