A cat owner is warning locals to beware after pets in one area of Norwich have been covered in a mystery oily substance.

People living in Bluebell Road first noticed the oil-like liquid after one cat returned home with some strange substance on her paw last week.

"Coco is only tiny, so she must've bolted away before anything to write home about happened,” said the neighbour of Coco's owner. “But she had a tiny little bit of this oil-type liquid on her paw.”

Locals thought nothing of the liquid - which washed off easily - until one day later when the woman's other cat went missing too.

They found Mr Moo, a black and white tuxedo cat, later that evening after hearing him screaming out in pain from the front of the house.

He was left badly burnt and covered in that same oil-like liquid.

The neighbour, who owns cats from the same litter as Coco and Mr Moo and wants to remain anonymous, believes the mysterious incidents are the result of human intervention.

"We heard a scream. Oh, it was a scream," she said. "I had Mr Moo cradled in my arms afterwards. The oil was all over him and he was in so much pain when we sponged him down.

"His chest was burnt red raw - something had been poured on him. With where his injuries are and where his skin is burnt, it looks like it could have only been a human.

“His fur fell off over the next few days and he is not even wandering outside anymore because of what happened."

But the nightmare was only just beginning for pet owners living in the area.

A few days later, the mother of Coco and Mr Moo, a tabby cat named Nara, also went missing from the back of her home and has yet to return.

"We don't know where Nara has gone,” the neighbour added. “She's usually such a homely animal, it's so out of character. We found Mr Moo because he's a loud cat but Nara isn't.

"We're just hoping she's not in the same situation as Mr Moo, or worse."
