A Norwich school will remain closed for the rest of the week due to concerns about the building's structure.

Avenue Junior School, in Avenue Road, did not open on Wednesday after a surveyor uncovered safety issues in the ceilings of rooms across the entire school.

Headteachers Mike Hooper and Michael Bunting have since confirmed the school will remain closed for the week as immediate repairs are needed on five classrooms and three other learning spaces.

Some other areas can be repaired later during the school holidays.

They explained classes will instead take place remotely from tomorrow and students will be sent more information about this by 5pm today.

They also said a plan for next week would be sent out by Friday afternoon but that they "cannot guarantee how many classes or year groups will be able to return right away".

Parents are advised to arrange childcare as a precaution.

"We truly understand how difficult this situation is for you and your families and we appreciate your patience and support during this challenging time," Mr Hooper and Mr Bunting wrote.

"If you need our help and support, please know that you can always contact us through the school office."

They added that packed lunches would be offered to children entitled to free school meals.

The issues were uncovered after a multi-academy agency told Norfolk County Council it was concerned about a particular type of ceiling.

27 schools, including Avenue Junior, were found to have these ceilings.
