A scheme to build a massive Costco on the edge of Norwich has met with a backlash from city folk.

People living near Broadland Business Park in Postwick where the 13,342 sqm warehouse will be built have slammed the project saying it could make traffic in the area as bad as Longwater.

They have also raised fears that the plans, which include a petrol station and 625-space car park, will damage the environment and kill off smaller businesses.

Jason Blues, who lives and works near the park, addressed the neighbourhood with a pamphlet which urged people to take action against it.

He said: "There are significant concerns among residents regarding the overdevelopment of this site.

"The primary issues include the anticipated increase in traffic at Postwick interchange and from the NDR toward the proposed petrol station, located next to Costa.

"The development could lead to an increased traffic volume that would markedly affect the area, similarly to what has been experienced at Longwater.

Local John French said the overdevelopment of the business park could lead to a decline of the city centre.

He said: "I feel it's such a shame that town and city centres are becoming havens for coffee shops and charity shops when the demise is due to some extent by out-of-town parks such as this one.

"Unfortunately progress brings its casualties and this is just another nail in the coffin for high streets."

Costco said the warehouse would "complement" commercial offerings in the area.

The firm’s bosses added the morning rush hour would not be impacted by customers as the store would not open until 10am on weekdays.

They said that a "detailed" transport assessment and travel plan would support the business' full planning application which is expected to be filed in the coming weeks.

Postwick Parish Council and Costco have been contacted for comment.
