A man who was thrown through a city centre shop window miraculously escaped with just a few cuts.

During the incident, which happened on a busy Monday afternoon in St Benedicts Street, it is believed two men had an altercation resulting in one pushing the other through a glass window.

Helen Shepherd, who owns the alternative clothing shop Elysium, said it was empty at the time as it was due to open this week.

She said: "There was one young man who had an altercation with another man and woman outside.

"I think something was said between them and before I knew it a young man was shoved, face first, through the shop's window.

"It was so loud and we're quite shaken up by it all.

"The paramedic came and his hands had cuts but that was about it - he was very lucky.

"There was a piece of glass hanging from the top of the window frame which, if it had dropped, could have been much worse.

"My partner tried to grab the guy who done it but he ran away."

Helen reported the incident to the police, which said: "We are investigating an incident of assault and criminal damage on Monday 7 October, 2024.

Helen, who also owns Sinsins Boutique in St Benedicts Street, was hoping to open her new shop next door.

However plans may be put on hold after the incident.

Helen added: "It was a major setback.

"The place is wrecked and I lost most of the day trying to sort out what happened.

"As my insurance only kicked in today, my landlord thinks the repairs might run into thousands of pounds."
