A popular pub on the outskirts of the city centre could be re-opening soon after it closed because of its former owner's conviction.

The Artichoke, in Magdalen Road, shut its doors after a recent court case found its former owner Kevin Tweedy guilty of rape and sexual assault.

However the boozer could be brought back to life after being bought by Huddersfield-based lawyer Lisa Davis.

She said: "It's a landmark building that had become an enjoyable destination known for a warm welcome and a lively atmosphere.

"It's been well known for having a capable and friendly staff team who have helped it to become a successful business.

"Many of my friends in Norwich have told me how much they value the Artichoke pub.

"I've met the staff to discuss how I can help them achieve their ambition to make the Artichoke a vibrant part of the city's pub scene.

"I'm also recruiting some of the most successful, and experienced, bar and pub operators in the area to support my aim to make this simply the best pub in Norwich."

Lisa added that she plans to re-open the pub in mid-October.

A statement released by the pub after the trial condemned the 66-year-old's actions, saying: "We are very sorry to his victim and to anyone affected by his actions.

"We have been assured that this man will not step foot onto these premises again and is remaining outside of Norwich until his sentencing."

After the conviction the pub announced it would be "closed for the foreseeable future".
