People living next to a tanning salon which went up in flames recalled their lucky escape after the blaze quickly spread to their home.

A couple whose house adjoins Sunshop, on the corner of Middletons Lane and Windsor Road, managed to flee their property relatively unscathed after the next-door shop caught fire at 12pm on Friday.

The couple's daughter, who didn't want to be named, said: "It could've been a lot worse but thankfully they're ok and just have a bit of smoke inhalation.

"They got checked out by paramedics are and alright.

"The fire brigade managed to contain it and the house just has a bit of smoke damage."

John Barnham, who lives down the road from the shop, added: "I saw about six fire engines and four ambulances turn up just down the road.

"Hopefully no one was hurt and the other buildings weren't affected."

It is believed there were staff in the tanning shop at the time of the fire and eyewitnesses say they saw them being looked at by paramedics.

During the incident, Middletons Lane and Bush Road were closed while emergency services worked to put out the fire.

The crews from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze for an hour after being called to the incident - which was resolved by 1.10pm.

Norwich Police issued a statement on Facebook saying it was "helping fire crews at the scene".

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "Appliances from Sprowston, Earlham, Carrow, Hethersett, Acle and Wroxham attended a commercial building fire in Windsor Road.

"Crews wore breathing apparatus and used main jets and hose reel jets to extinguish the fire."

It is currently unknown how the blaze started.
