A hundred extra e-bikes - and new bays to park them in - are likely to be coming to the streets of Norwich.

Norfolk County Council has signalled that it wants to extend the contract it has with Beryl to provide rental bikes in Norwich and surrounding areas.

Beryl has had that contract since 2020 and Conservative-controlled County Hall is keen to extend it for a further two years from March 2025 to March 2027.

And, as part of that extension - and in response to demand for electric bikes - the county council will use government funding to get a further 100 e-bikes on the road, along with more bays.

There are currently around 300 standard bikes and 200 e-bikes available to hire through the Beryl scheme, with more than 160 bays across Greater Norwich.

The scheme was set up using £700,000 from money awarded to County Hall by the Department for Transport, but all on-going costs are covered by Beryl.

Graham Plant, the council's cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, used delegated powers to approve the contract extension award.

Beryl also provides rental e-scooters, but those are covered by a separate contract.
