One of the city’s busiest streets was plunged into chaos after emergency services worked to bring a man down from a nearby multi-storey car park.
St Stephen’s Street was cordoned off for two hours on Thursday morning after a lone figure was spotted on top of the NCP car park.
The dramatic scenes brought the usually bustling street to a standstill with shops forced to shut and traffic diverted.
Onlookers witnessed the man pace up and down along the edge of the car park's fencing while a police cordon was set up.
One of the bus drivers stuck in the queue said: "I was here about 9.15am and there was a black car in the middle of the road.
"At first I thought it might have been a driver trying to turn around - but then I saw police jump out of it and asked us not to move."
A woman who lives in Malthouse Road added: "I only live around the corner but they blocked off half of the underpass closest to Wilko.
"I couldn't get home and was worried the road could have been closed all day if he hadn't come down."
Another onlooker added: "I came from Hethersett and the bus brought us all the way around to Theatre Street.
"I then heard that a man was up on the roof of the car park.
"I think he was screaming and shouting at people down here - it's sad but glad he got down safely."

"The man is now being treated by paramedics at scene."
