A former asylum seeker smashed windows and doors at a Norwich property housing others seeking sanctuary.

Police had to be called after reports that the facility run by Serco was under attack, Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard.

Shwana Mohammed, 33, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing criminal damage over the incident on August 28.

Nicola Lamb, prosecuting, said “serious damage” had been caused to the property including smashed windows and damage to doors.

Mohammed, of Roundwell Road in Norwich, who sought asylum after arriving in the UK from Kurdistan in 2019, had been evicted from the property after being granted leave to stay in the UK, she added.

Ralph Gillam, mitigating, said he regretted his actions.

“He had previously lived at this property for five years but his change in status meant he was told to leave.

"Sadly he was unable to find any alternative accommodation and was desperate in his attempt to get in,” he added.

Magistrates fined him £80 and ordered he pay a contribution of £40 towards repairing the damage.
