The gym at UEA remains closed following the death of a student last week. 

Emergency services were called at about 7pm on Wednesday to the gym at the Sportspark following reports of a medical emergency involving a man who had been using gym equipment. 

Last week the student named as medical student Mohammed Farraj, was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sportspark was closed in the days following the incident however on Friday UEA confirmed that the Sportspark would reopen on Saturday but the gym would remain closed "until further notice". 

Mohammed was from the Kurdish community and an active participant in the Army Reserves and sports clubs at the UEA.

A number of floral tributes were laid outside the Sportspark following the death of Mohammed last week.

Staff and students at the university spoke of their shock and sadness following the incident. 

Olivia Hunt, who is the activities and opportunities officer for the students union, has encouraged students to pull together following Mr Farraj's tragic death.

She said: "Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time.

"The loss will undoubtedly affect our entire UEA community, and it’s important that we come together to support one another.

"We encourage everyone to check in on friends and colleagues who may be struggling and remind those in need that support is available through our student services team."
