A hospital site has erected multiple electric vehicle (EV) chargers while work continues on a new multi-million pound ward.

Installing the charging points was a condition for building the 48-bed ward Willow Unit at Norwich Community Hospital in Bowthorpe Road.

Two EV chargers have already been installed at the site and there is the possibility that six more are on their way.

A statement from Bidwells, acting on behalf of the hospital, said: "The applicant has already implemented two new EV charging points as part of the plans.

Initial plans also stated that the staff car park already has four EV parking spaces with charging points, to go with the 17 new staff parking spaces that will be provided.

Previously plans for the unit were approved on the condition that "no development shall take place until the EV charging points and external lighting facilities have been provided and made available".

The £19.2m ward was originally expected to be up and running in June this year, but planning consent for the project was not granted until May.

When open it will provide therapeutic and rehabilitative care.

However delays in granting the scheme planning permission have seen its opening day pushed back.

The unit is being constructed in a factory in Cramlington, near Newcastle upon Tyne, before being delivered to the site in Norwich and fixed into place.

While construction has been carried out, the trust has also re-purposed the former Priscilla Bacon Lodge at Colman Hospital as a similar facility - which will remain open until the unit is complete.
