What happened at UEA gym on night Mohammed Farraj died?

The police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been investigating how Mohammed Farraj died at the university gym on Wednesday evening.

One student at the UEA said it is believed Mohammed was using the Smith machine - an assisted weight machine with the barbell fixed in place - at the time of his death.

According to sources, a "massive crash" was heard in the gym before Mohammed was spotted lying on the floor.

Two people using the gym are believed to have given him CPR until the ambulance crews arrived and took over.

Although other areas of the Sportspark reopened on Saturday morning, the gym remained closed.

A spokesman for the UEA Sportspark said: "We are continuing to support the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with their enquiries, and the University has decided to keep the related item of equipment out of public use until further notice, while the HSE investigation remains ongoing.

"The Sportspark gym will reopen on Tuesday at 2pm."

Meanwhile, the police probe into the incident has closed.

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers have finished conducting their enquiries and have concluded that there was no third-party involvement.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"There are no further criminal matters for the police to investigate. A file will be prepared for the coroner in due course."

He was pronounced dead after emergency services were called to the Sportspark at 7pm on Wednesday following reports of a medical emergency involving a man who had been using gym equipment.

Paige Barella, 23, works as a swimming coach at the Sportspark. 

She was supposed to be going in for a shift on Wednesday night when she got the call that the sports facility had been closed.

She said: "I believe the lifeguards were called to help too once the pool had been evacuated.

"If people have to miss sessions because staff need to recuperate then so be it.

"Someone has died and people will need time to recover from that."

The lengthy closure of the gym has led to questions raised on social media about what happened that night.

One person asked: "I know investigations can be long... was one machine involved, or was the speed/lack of emergency response the issue?"
