The gym at the University of East Anglia is set to reopen today after the death of a student last week.

Emergency services were called at 7pm on Wednesday to the gym at the Sportspark following reports of a medical emergency involving a man who had been using gym equipment.

Last week the student, named as Mohammed Farraj, was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, the whole Sportspark was closed while investigations were carried out.

It reopened on Saturday but the gym remained shut

The university has since confirmed the gym will reopen at 2pm today (October 22).

A UEA spokesman said: "Members will be contacted directly regarding reimbursement for the period that the fitness centre and wider building have been unavailable.

"We are continuing to support the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with their enquiries, and the University has decided to keep the related item of equipment out of public use until further notice, while the HSE investigation remains ongoing."

The HSE has confirmed that it is investigating the death but Norfolk Constabulary has said its probe has been closed.

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers have finished conducting their enquiries and have concluded that there was no third-party involvement.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"There are no further criminal matters for the police to investigate. A file will be prepared for the coroner in due course."

Mohammed, a medical student, was from the Kurdish community and an active participant in the Army Reserves and sports clubs at the UEA.

A number of floral tributes were laid outside the Sportspark following his death.
