The hunt for the owner of an exotic tortoise is on after one was found at a city park.

Kevin Murphy, who runs Norfolk Wildlife Rescue, was alerted by a member of the public who found the tortoise in Eaton Park last week.

Unfortunately no owner for the Mediterranean tortoise, which has been named Terry, has been found, despite a few people coming forward to claim the animal.

Mr Murphy said: "It was found on Wednesday around 6pm, by the Eaton Park entrance, going to North Park Avenue.

"The person who found it said they waited for 10 minutes to see if anyone turned up but they didn't.

"I was made aware of what had happened and collected the tortoise, which is currently with a reptile specialist, until the owner is traced.

"It's not microchipped so I'll need proof of ownership, such as veterinary documents or photos that match the shell patterns.

"If the owner isn't found it will be rehomed with an experienced reptile handler."

Mr Murphy can be contacted either via Facebook, at Norfolk Wildlife Rescue, or telephone on 07932 844524.

THE IBERA TORTOISE

The Ibera tortoise, also known as a "Spur-Thighed tortoise" is a widely spread Mediterranean reptile.

They're called this because of the distinctive spur-like projections they develop on the back of their hind legs.

They also have a pattern on top of the shell with colours such as yellow, brown and black.

It can be found around the world in countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Jordan.

It is a medium-sized tortoise, growing to an average shell length of 25cm.
