People living in a quiet estate celebrated the refusal of two takeaway giants' extended opening hours.

Both Domino's and Papa John's, in Colman Road, applied to extend their takeaway operating hours to 4am - which garnered fierce backlash from locals living nearby.

However, hot on the heels of Domino's refusal earlier this week, Norwich City Council has also refused Papa John's application on the grounds it "is not considered appropriate" for the area.

As well as stating the noise would be harmful to neighbours the council's decision said: "The use of a premises open routinely past midnight is more akin to the uses of late night activity zone.

The news is cause to celebrate for those who have opposed the plans since the beginning.

Sarah Mason, 69, lives opposite the row of shops and said: "I heard about Domino's being refused which was good news.

"I'm pleased the plans have been refused because it's completely unnecessary.

"Now I don't have to worry about getting a good nights sleep."

Wendy Ablett added: "I was worried about what would happen if either of the applications were approved.

"Thankfully, because they've both been refused, it should put an end to it."

Local Lib Dem councillor Judith Lubbock, who opposed the plans from the outset, said the denied plans "is really good news".

She added "People live all around that takeaway and it would have been extremely disruptive for them.

"11 o'clock is late enough."

Papa John's initial application for longer hours was submitted in December 2022 but was blocked after concerns were raised over noise issues.

However the new bid, in August, happened after a hearing by the licencing team granted it permission to operate until this time.
