Loving tributes have poured in from the family of a medical student who died at the UEA Sportspark.

Paying tribute to Mohammed Farraj, 21, a female cousin said he was "super smart and so likeable".

"I don't think I have ever met anyone like him in my life," she said. "He was so intelligent and there was always so much you wanted to ask him.

"He was the purest and kindest soul and was always there to help others.

"His mother, father and younger teenage brother are in bits, they are heartbroken."

Emergency services were called to reports of a medical emergency at UEA Sportspark at around 7pm on October 16.

Mohammed was pronounced dead at the scene, with the coroner determining that he had died of "traumatic head injuries".

The student’s father, Hashim Farraj, described him as “a fit and well young man”.

“God bless him,” he added.

His funeral was held in Stoke-on-Trent, where he grew up, last Thursday.

Around 30 students from the UEA made the journey.

“It's all so fresh since his passing family members have been visiting the house every day to pay their respects,” his cousin added. "He had one of the biggest Muslim funerals in Stoke.

"So many people turned out."

Mohammed was a practising Muslim and a key part of his belief is in Sadaqah Jariyah - the idea that charity on someone's behalf will be a means of continual reward after their death.

As such, the UEA Islamic Society has launched several fundraisers in memory of their friend, including a water well fund, which has raised more than £11,000 to build wells in drought-hit communities in Pakistan.

Another fundraiser is raising money to help purchase land to build a new masjid, or mosque, in Drayton Road.
