A serial shoplifter banned from Norwich stores has been jailed again after stealing just days after being released from prison.

Paul James, 34, who has almost 400 previous offences, admitted a theft from the Nike Store in Riverside despite being prohibited from entering the premises by a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard he had been ordered to leave after being spotted by security staff but had still walked off with a pair of £100 trainers.

He had been released after a prison sentence for numerous other shoplifting offences four days before the November 4 theft.

James, of no fixed abode, also admitted breaching the CBO by entering Sainsbury’s on St Stephens Street and admitted seven further offences to be taken into consideration.

Julie Adams, mitigating, said: “These short prison sentences are clearly not working as when released he is simply back on the streets with no money.”

But magistrates jailed him for 18 weeks and ordered him to pay compensation telling him: “We are very concerned about your prolific level of shoplifting that has been going on for a number of years.”
