Drivers were facing significant delays due to construction work at a major junction near Norwich.
According to those stuck in the queues, a digger working on a path near the NDR sliproad in Postwick caused the delays.
The gridlock came after the installation of four-way temporary traffic lights on the A1042 Yarmouth Road which caused further delays in the area.
According to witnesses, the traffic was said to be backed up to Brundall roundabout westbound and the A146 eastbound.
Earlier this morning, motorists experienced mile-long delays on the A47 eastbound near Thickthorn following a crash at about 7.30am.
Delays also built back on the A11 towards the Thickthorn roundabout as the disruption spread to nearby roads.
