Norwich City is in no rush to cash in on Marcelino Nunez ahead of the Copa America, after Turkish top flight side Trabzonspor targeted the midfielder.

The ball is now firmly back in the court of the ambitious Europa League hopefuls, who have also been touted with a move for Nunez’s Chilean international team mate Alexis Sanchez this summer.

Fresh reports in South America suggest Trabzon are weighing up an improved £4.2m bid for the 24-year-old.

Nunez’s first club, Universidad Católica, negotiated a 25pc sell on in the original £3.5m package that brought the Chilean to England in 2022, which would have to be factored into any further negotiations during the close season.

The transfer window in Turkey is not officially open until June 24.

City have made their stance clear in exploratory discussions, but believe Nunez’s value could increase with an eyecatching Copa America tournament.

Chile begin their campaign on Saturday against Peru, with other group match ups against World Cup holders Argentina and Canada.

Trabzon officials hope the lure of European football could tempt Nunez, with personal terms not expected to be an issue with the player and his advisors.

Nunez is under contract at Carrow Road until 2026, and had established himself in former boss David Wagner’s first team plans towards the end of the previous Championship season.

The midfielder etched his place in derby folklore with the match winner to sink Ipswich Town in early April.

Nunez is also emerging as a key figure in La Roja’s plans at international level in recent months, after recovering from his red card on World Cup qualifying duty last October.

The South American scored in a friendly against France in March, and played the full 90 minutes in Chile’s 3-0 friendly win over Paraguay last week ahead of flying to the States for the Copa America.

Norwich will need to trade this summer as sporting director Ben Knapper looks to refresh the squad inherited by new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup.

The likes of Jon Rowe, Gabby Sara and Josh Sargent are expected to attract interest, while Adam Idah is strongly touted with a permanent move to Celtic.

Panamanian international Jose Cordoba’s move from Levski Sofia was rubber stamped last week, when the window officially opened in England, while Fortuna Dusseldorf took up their buy option on Christos Tzolis.
