Norwich City winger Abu Kamara remains on Portsmouth's list of transfer targets, even if a Fratton Park return looks unlikely this summer.

The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Pompey, is expected to report to the Lotus Training Centre after an extended summer break.

From there it's likely he'll remain a part of the first-team group, having been earmarked for a key role since midway through last season.

New head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup confirmed at his unveiling a desire to assess all of the players currently in his group, saying he wanted those returning from loans to feel like a Norwich player.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho says he'd be keen to reunite with Kamara if he does become available, however, and will be keeping an eye on his City situation.

"Abs has been away with the England under-20s, and had a massive impact there in the couple of games they’ve played," he said.

"I'm assuming the new manager at Norwich will want to have a proper look at him before making a decision.

"You never know, we’ll certainly be there if anything develops from Norwich’s standpoint."

With several senior heads released last month, City are likely to need replacements all over the pitch before the 2023-24 season kicks off.

With finances limited they'll have to rely on young players stepping up, and Mousinho knows that means Kamara could be needed by his parent club in their new era.

But he also knows how quickly things can change in football, and hopes the door may open slightly for a move as the Championship kick-off gets closer.

"We know Abs was excellent for us last season," he continued, speaking to The News. "But you never know what Norwich have in the building, what they’re planning to bring in or what profiles they’re looking for.

"From our point of view if Abu becomes available, we’ll be there. So we’ll keep in contact and go from there."
