Former Norwich City midfielder Leroy Fer is the latest player to move to the Middle East after joining Dubai-based side Al Nasr SC.

The Dutch international had been plying his trade at Turkish side Alanyaspor since 2021 and, at 34, has elected to follow the growing numbers of footballers heading to the Gulf States to continue their career.

Fer has followed former boss Alfred Schreuder to the UAE after his contract in Turkey expired at the end of last season.

Norwich signed Fer from FC Twente for a reported £4.4m back in 2013 as part of their Premier League recruitment under Chris Hughton in a summer that saw them bring Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Gary Hooper and Nathan Redmond to the club.

He made 33 appearances in Norfolk before moving to QPR for £8m following the Canaries' subsequent relegation from the top-flight. Fer also had spells at Swansea and Feyenoord before his move to Turkey.

Fer has signed a one-year deal at Al Nasr and will feature in their squad in the UAE Pro League next season. They finished sixth in the table last term and play their matches at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.

Mathias Normann, who spent a season on loan at Norwich from Rostov in 2022/23, is also in the region, having joined Saudi Arabian side Al Raed last summer after his spell in Russia ended.
