A young Norwich City side starts without a recognised striker as they start their pre-season with a friendly against Northampton Town this afternoon.

Norwich face the Cobblers at Sixfields in their first game under Johannes Hoff Thorup's leadership, with Adam Idah and Ashley Barnes absent from their squad.

Barnes is understood to be absent as a precautionary measure over an injury sustained at the end of last season, while Liam Gibbs and Onel Hernandez are in the late stages in their own recoveries from long-term issues.

Jaden Warner is also absent with a minor injury, but a series of other returning loanees are in the Canaries' squad.

Club captain Grant Hanley is yet to return to training after an extended break owing to participation in the Euros with Scotland, as are compatriots Kenny McLean and Angus Gunn.

Marcelino Nunez and Josh Sargent are also still enjoying holiday having played in the Copa America with Chile and the USA respectively, along with quarter-finalist and summer signing Jose Cordoba.

Former City prospect William Hondermarck starts for the hosts, but Cobblers new boy Cameron McGeehan misses out on a reunion with his former club.
