Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup is delighted with new signing Jose Cordoba, having finally got to work with the centre-back.

The Canaries agreed a deal for Cordoba back at the start of June, making a statement in their summer of change by spending a reported £3million to prise him away from Bulgarian side Levski Sofia.

He ticked off a top priority for sporting director Ben Knapper, whose only left-footed centre-back departed when Ben Gibson left at the end of his contract.

A trip to the Copa America quickly followed for Cordoba, however, the result of their run to the quarter-finals an extended break and a delayed reunion with Thorup.

But the Dane was delighted with what he saw from the 23-year-old in their first week working together in the flesh, and says he suits his system perfectly at Carrow Road.

"He's a great centre-back," said Thorup of Cordoba. "Left-footed, so calm on the ball, so comfortable.

"But also for us, with a high back line, it's so important for him and for us to have some pace in that line.

"So definitely he will be valuable for us. I think we could already see that [against Magdeburg]."

Some fans have been exasperated by the failure to add to Cordoba's signing, with transfer activity quiet and still no senior left-back in Thorup's squad.

A deal has been agreed to sign Manchester City's Callum Doyle on loan but is waiting for the Premier League champions' sign-off, while Knapper continues to spin plates for a second addition in the position.

Thorup hinted at some transfer news sooner rather than later, however, suggesting that he was expecting an incoming before long.

"What did I say in Liege about the set-piece coach," he asked, before being reminded he said something was close. "Maybe I will say the same this time."
