Norwich City youngster Finley Welch has joined Boston United on an initial one-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old has signed for Ian Culverhouse's side in the first temporary exit of his young career, having failed to make Johannes Hoff Thorup's first-team group this summer.

He featured in multiple pre-season fixtures for the Canaries, including against Northampton Town and Standard Liege, but didn't receive the same promotion the likes of Gabriel Forsyth and Elliot Myles have.

That's led to his move to Lincolnshire, just seven months after David Wagner gave him his senior debut in a 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough.

The Pilgrims are currently 22nd in the National League, the fifth division of English football and the highest in the non-league pyramid. They'll hope Welch's arrival gives them the boost they need, with only nine points collected from their first 13 games.

The attacking midfielder still has two years left on his Carrow Road contract, with a club option to extend by a further 12 months. He's impressed under Alan Neilson for the under-21s, but has found first-team opportunities limited since those pre-season games.

Welch will wear the number 14 shirt for Boston and could feature as soon as Saturday's meeting with Halifax Town. He joined the Norwich academy aged 11 and has made 72 appearances at under-18 and under-21 levels.

Fellow youth player Sonny Rowland has secured his future at the club, signing his first professional deal until 2027. The 17-year-old moved to Norfolk from Watford in 2022, and has starred for Greg Crane's under-18s.

He told official club channels of the deal: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign my first professional contract for the club. It’s the right step in the right direction for me as a player. It’s something I’ve been working for my whole life.

“I like to break up play, I like getting stuck in, but I also enjoy getting on the ball, playing forward and creating chances.”
