Former Norwich City player and assistant manager Ian Culverhouse has been sacked as manager of National League side Boston United.

The 60-year-old has been relieved of his duties at Jakemans Community Stadium after a difficult start to life in the fifth tier that has seen win only twice in their opening 16 matches, with his spell in charge culminating in a 1-1 draw against Eastleigh on Saturday.

Culverhouse, who has also enjoyed two stints in charge of King's Lynn, led the Pilgrims to promotion via the play-offs last season, but his two-year spell in charge ended officially on Monday after the club released a statement confirming his departure.

"Ian took charge at the Jakemans Community Stadium in September 2022, helping to preserve the club's National League North status in his first season at the helm, before guiding the Pilgrims to promotion through the play-offs in May," Boston United said on their website.

"However, a difficult start to life in the National League has led to a change being made."

Culverhouse has also had spells in charge of Grantham and Kettering following a coaching career that included assisting Paul Lambert during his stints at Wycombe and Colchester before returning to Norwich to play a key role in their double promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

He left Carrow Road to join Lambert at Aston Villa before embarking on his own managerial career with the Linnets in 2017. He returned in 2018 to guide them to the National League for the first time in their history.

Culverhouse departs the Pilgrims sitting 23rd in the division, five points from safety.

Culverhouse made 369 appearances for Norwich during a nine-year stint as a player between 1985 to 1994 after joining from Tottenham Hotspur. He formed part of the iconic side that beat Bayern Munich during their Uefa Cup run in 1993.
