Ben Chrisene was handed his England U21 debut in the closing stages of their goalless friendly draw with Spain.

Norwich City’s defender was called up to the Young Lions squad for the first time after a combination of promotions to the senior squad and injury withdrawals - including Canaries colleague Callum Doyle.

Chrisene replaced Manchester City midfielder James McAtee in stoppage time as England U21s were held in difficult conditions in Cadiz.

Kellen Fisher also earned a call-up to the U21 squad for the first time, but was an unused substitute in Spain. The pair will now travel to the Netherlands for the final game of the international camp before City’s Championship return against West Brom.

Scottish duo Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean were handed starts by Steve Clarke in their Nations League clash against Croatia at Hampden Park.

City club captain Hanley partnered John Souttar in the back line, but was withdrawn at half time with Croatia reduced to 10 men after Petar Sucic received a second yellow card in the first half.

Alongside former City loanee Billy Gilmour, now at Napoli, McLean was tasked with shadowing Croatia’s midfield duo of Mateo Kovacic and Luka Modric.

McLean lasted until the 67th minute until he was replaced by John McGinn in the centre of midfield. It was the Aston Villa man who supplied the winning goal in the 86th minute of the encounter, meeting Ben Doak’s cleared cross to see his deflected finish end a winless run at Hampden.

City’s experienced midfielder has served three of his four game suspension after it was extended by the FA for misconduct. He will miss the Canaries’ trip to the Hawthorns next weekend.

Ante Crnac also played some international minutes, coming on as a second half substitute in Croatia U21s Euro qualifier against Georgia.

City’s striker replaced Luka Stojkovic in the 59th minute of the encounter, but was unable to help his side rescue a point at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium.
